VIDEO : on-camera flash techniques - Part I

Bert is currently in Oslo, giving a 2 day workshop there but he managed to get this new video rendered succesfully before he stepped on the plane :-)

In this movie you can see how Bert works with his flash on-camera (yes people, that iron socket thingy on top of your camera isn’t only made to fit a Pocket Wizard, Skyport, Cactus trigger, etc. It might come as a shock to many of you, but you can actually fit a flash in there AND get some nice results with it !

Take a look how Bert does it and let us know what you think of it in the comments !

  1. Great and simple tips. There will always be some situations where you’ve brought a camera and a flash, but left the whole lighting gear bag at home.

    2 questions:
    - what metering mode did you use (I’m guessing center-weighted)
    - and did you set the flash to TTL or TTL-BL (the latter is actually a Nikon term used to indicate that the flash tries to balance both the subject and the background. Canon probably has an equivalent flash mode)?

  2. Great video. Thanks a lot. It is also important to work with on-camera-flash.

  3. Thanks Bert so great to see a new video and a very helpful one at that cant wait to see if there is a part 2.
I’ll be watching this one a couple of times to make sure I get all your tips, exposure and metering is where I am struggling the most when using flash

Great stuff again as always. I usually use on camera flas, I have an SB900 Nikon, but I can use the body as a commander if needed. But here, in hungary nobody is a PW reseller, and it’s not easy to get a pair :-(

  5. Another great movie. Everytime when i open my rss reader, i’m waiting for some post from You guys. Keep the good work.

Once again we find a great little informative video. I cant wait for part 2, it should be just as good if not better. Your tips are very appreciated.

  7. If possible Bert I would love to here about some of the settings on the Canon flashes and how to use and understand them, You way of explaining things is really great it just really clicks with me Lime rocks

  8. Thanks Bert, looking forward to part 2 and others to come. Could you please touch on the subject of white balance and balancing flash output with ambient indoor incandescent (2800K) lighting? Thank you!

  9. The whole concept behind balancing different light sources is to essentially get all of the light to be the same color so you can balance that in the camera… If you have a mixture of incandescent and fluorescent, see if you can remove one of those sources; so, if you’re ultimately working with incandescent light, you’ll want your flash to match that color by way of adding a CTO gel on the flash. Once all of your light is the same color, you can set your camera’s white balance on incandescent or see if auto does the trick for you knowing that, if you shoot raw, it’s a fairly easy change in post.

Thanks Bert…would like to see how you handle bounced or feathered on-camera flash as I think this is a good compromise when you have the right envirnoment to bounce the flash.

  11. This is a great video.

Although I wonder if you can make the same results with a on board flash?
