VIDEO : Bert shoots Erika on Location

The launch of LIME wouldn’t be complete without a photography video. We believe that video can be a really powerful tool to educate and get inspired so we are going to produce lots of video’s on different topics for you.

In this first video I’m going to take you on a shoot with my favorite model Erika in an abandoned factory. This video is not about the exact settings on my camera or flashes because circumstances will never be the same if you shoot something similar. This video is about how I allow one lighting setup to lead to another … and yet another. I usually start out with some elements and techniques that are familiar to me but whenever I have the time I don’t stay with what’s familiar. I really love the process of altering the lighting setup until it becomes something completely different than where I started. Surprising yourself keeps photography fun and will dramatically improve your skills.

I hope you liked watching this video as much as I did making it.

  4. Amazing video guys!
I’ve really learned a lot from this already!

  7. Ho Yeah!!! You rock dude!
    Really great Video!!
But… maybe the white text on the green background hurt my eyes a little bit…

  8. Are those Vivitars you use? What I’ve always wondered is, how do you learn to play with the lighting. It’s sometimes a big jump from having what you want to actually realizing it by playing around with the power settings, accessories, location… Do you learn it while doing it or are there some theoretical stuff behind it?

  9. Hi Guys,
This is a great video and a great kickoff. I’ll stay tuned !!!

  10. Fred Gandolfo

So excited about this site…the new video is great!

    Rory

  14. Bob

Thanks for sharing your wisdom with the shooter community!

I appreciate that you show what was done, instead of getting into micro detail like flash setting etc.

I’m inspired to get out and do your my own shoots using what I’ve learned here as a guide.

    Keep up the good work!

(My only suggestion regarding your site would be to brighten down the white text a couple notches - it’s hard to read against the green background)

  15. Wauw, great video! Congrats!
    Grtz,
    Lennert

Till then I will enjoy your videos :)

  25. Great to finally have the cat out of the bag after a week of anxious waiting :)

The blog RSS feed is in my feedreader, the calendar feed in my iCal and I’ve subscribed to the podcast in iTunes (good thinking to add it there by the way). I think I’ll be able to stay on top of things!

Best of luck with the new project!

Lovely stuff guys, looking forward to seeing what else appears in the fruitbowl ;)

    “…or something hot” - classic :D

  28. Hey guys. Well done on a great video, and congratulations on finally launching SqueezeTheLime. I’ve been watching your “Confessions” video’s and find them perfect for the type of learning I want to do. No mucking around, not overly technical mumbojumbo, juts location, setup, result. Nice!

Look forward to listening to the podcast and devouring everything you guys have on offer.

  29. Jonas Ebersold

    Hey guy’s!
Great video! Realy! I love it :-)
I wonder at the next videos, podcasts, etc.
It’s an great idea to show the pictures in a flickr stream and not only in the video!
But one question: Can you please provide us the shutter speed, flash power, … for the next videos? I think this could help to learn how this components interact (and how the settings work in a finished pic)

    Greatings from Germany,
    Jonas

  30. wow, great! I love this project….

  31. Hi guys!

And all this thanks to a little (although little??) idea and a mountain of work. Much respect to you guys and lot’s of inspiration and satisfaction (and hard work without a doubt) for the future!

One day old and already in my favorites… a record!

    MERCI!

  40. This new video was just fantastic!! I love the the way you had a great motivation for your light.. The way you find backdrops everywhere is just incredible! Thank you for the lesson and PLEASE keep it up. :D

  41. great video, fantastic to see the viv 285HV’s on a real shoot.

  42. Hi Bert,
I really enjoyed your latest video. I love how simple your setups are and how stunning results they produce.
There has been a question on my mind for quite some time now though: often you say that Erika is your favorite model and that you love shooting her - this video shows that this time you shot her half naked - I was wondering: What does your wife think about it? There’s no way mine would let me do something like that…
    Thanks
    Honza

  43. great movie, inspiring.

  44. Very nice work guys. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us.

One of the things you may want to consider is convincing people to get past their fear. They see beautiful shots like yours and are afraid to try anything beyond a snapshot. Lighting seems to be one of the biggest fears. Especially flash. I don’t think people realize when you say test shots that you really are testing the lighting and that you sometimes make some REALLY bad images on the way to the good ones. (Well, you have enough experience to know what isn’t going to work, but still…) Shooting digital is pretty much free so there should be no fear of wasting film. Convince people to not stop at the on camera flash snapshot, or better yet to not take the on camera flash shot, and try something different. Something that they wouldn’t think of trying in the past. To waste a few electrons on an SD card in exchange for some knowledge of what works and what doesn’t.

  45. dzjeeeez, thanks for all these comments. I’m a bit overwhelmed.

@Haryo: Yep, Vivitars are just fine. Best way to learn is to see how natural light works and then start to get similar results with just one flash. That’s the way I learned (and by many mistakes). Some cool workshops, video’s and lots of reading did the rest.

@Bob: I tend to forget the micro information ;-)

@Maxim: I’ll be doing mostly video’s for LIME now but here will be probably other Confessions of a Photographer video’s.

@Karimm: lots of practice before the mirror :-)

@nesayus: really hope to meet you on one of the workshops

@Jonas: I’ll include the EXIF in the pictures on Flickr from next shoot on.

    @Ties: Don’t worry we won’t grow up.

@Kristof: Hope the community will keep growing.

@Honza: Interesting question. I’ll handle it in the next podcast’s ‘dear Lime’ section. Maybe I can prevent some divorces ;-)

@Geoff: Good suggestion. We hope to get that message across by showing how we play but we may do something specific on the subject too.

  46. Great project. Love it :-) Now all I have to do is move back to Belgium ;-). I’ll look forward to workshops when I’m visiting!

  47. Neuer Foto-Podcast und Limetten…

Was, schon wieder ein neuer Foto-Podcast? Gibt es denn nicht schon genug davon?
Der Reihe nach: die beiden belgischen Berufsfotografen und Blogger Bert Stephani (Blog ‘Confessions of a Photographer‘) und Pieter van Impe (Blog http://www.fotografie...

  48. Yves

Bert, once again a great and educative video.

  49. Wow– this was great. I’m so happy to be part of LIME. I’m looking forward to more!
By the way, if you bring your workshops to California, I will be the first in line to attend.
    Your friend in photography,

    Vivian

  50. alim

Excellent first video…LIME is a great idea and I can’t wait to see more…my mouth is already puckering….lol

  51. Hello Bert & Pieter,
Great first video. Simple setup with amazing results. I’m excited about having the podcast on itunes to listen to anytime of the day. Are you going to make the videos also available on itunes to watch? Thanks again.

  52. Erika gets half undressed and you’re wearing a big fleece. Being a model is though ;-)

  53. Love the video workshop on lighting. Would it be possible to know the exif setting as well. For example what mode do you use including aperture and shutter speed. This would go a long way for amateurs to learn. Cheers.

    from Singapore

  54. Nice setup you guys got here! I’m certainly going to bookmark your new site and follow the videos / howto’s.
Hoping to be on one of the workshops next year!

Keep it up guys, the community appreciates it!

    Cheers and happy holidays

  55. Molly

Thank you so much for this! So much easier to see a video rather than trying to picture it in your head. Thanks!!

  56. Amazing how you can get so many lighting styles out of such a small amount of equipment! Absolutely love your work!

  57. Leuke video! Vooral de laatste foto’s vind ik heel mooi en interessant om volgen.

  58. Bert & Pieter, Congrats with this pro initiative on an international level, finally someone who has the guts to do this in Belgium. Too often we think that only bigger countries can do these kind of things! Happy travelling (as soon as the US and Australia finds out about this site :))

  59. Bert,

    THANK YOU.

What an excellent reminder to keep trying new ideas. Sometimes I just get stuck on my “regular” setup and don’t think about playing around and changing things up. Excellent video.

    Cheers,
    Dan

  60. Wow, excellent stuff, AGAIN! Many thanks for sharing this.
    Keep up the good work.
See you soon on one of your workshops.

  61. Congrats Bert and Pieter!
This could become the most awesome (non-documentary) photography blog. It’s already placed between my feeds.
Good stuff, also in the photographs. I prefer the National Geographic-like photos with Erika and the red cloth-thingy.

Keep up the good work :)

    gr.
    Christel

  62. What a wonderful photo’s! Keep up the good work!

  63. @Veerle: Why don’t you set up a workshop in California for us? :-)

    @Mike: Erika is a trooper

  64. Brilliant!
i loved how you went wide to capture the flashes going off aswell..

Thank you guys so much, all your videos are very helpful!
    You’re the breast!

  68. Great video!

The location reminds me of the kind of work I shoot as well. Please check out the site and let me know what you think! I’m sure you won’t be wasting your time.

    :)

    -Matt

  69. This video was very good helping me understand some things and also a lot inspirational.
I really like what you are doing on the webside and with the posted videos “workshops”.
