VIDEO : a behind the scenes look at a snowboard shoot in Austria

Last weekend you could find me in Austria. It wasn’t really a holiday since we had some big plans : a back country snowboard shoot. No rules, no boundaries, just some personal work to recharge my creative batteries & practise a new type of photography.
Unfortunately the back country part was nearly impossible because there wasn’t any fresh show so we had to bring a pick axe if we wanted to dig something out … Backup plan time : get up the mountain, into the fun park & shoot there. The results can be found at the bottom of this post. The video is more of a road trip report, if all you care about is seeing me shoot then skip to the second half :-)

No voice over commentary in this movie, so feel free to post any questions you might have after seeing it, in the comments.

Enjoy !

  1. Hey Pieter, apparently I have to type a password to be able to watch the video?

  2. Hi,

the video requires a password? I think this shouldn’t be, right?

    Greetings

  3. My mistake … but it’s fixed now

  4. Ah thanks, it works now :)
Impressive picturework with nice soundtrack, what more can one ask for!

  5. Wow. Great vid and some brilliant pictures. Love the ones with the snow spray on the lens :)

  6. Pieter, I recently was sent to your website by a friend, and it is great! Thank you so much for sharing all this. I especially love the behind the scenes, showing how you do things, and your post about how to keep your passion in check. I can totally relate, although I’m merely an amateur photog.

Anyways, what software do you use to make your videos?! These are awesome!!

nice pics looks like a fun project. I see you had your pocket wizard on camera were you using strobes?

  8. Dave

OOPS MISSED THAT PART IN THE VID i SEE YOU HAD AT LEAST ONE

  9. awesome photos!
pity there isn’t any snow here!

  10. @Dave : nope, no flashes where used. I set it up but never used it :-)
The pocket wizard was on my camera to trigger the second camera that was lying just underneath the jump (2 angles on every shot)

  11. I love that movie. Great one, Pieter!
1 question: Did you continuously burst when they jumped or just one-click shot?

  12. This look again really awesome! Keep on going with this great stuff!

  13. Sweet pants Pieter! And kickass video offcourse.

  14. How did you go with the Camera gear in the snow, Did you take any special measures to protect it.

  15. That’s what I call CLOUD SURFING… great pics, Pieter.

  16. Me, David

To me this is two heavens merging to one.. snowboarding and photography, it just can’t get any better!!!
Very nice movie and beautifull pics!

I would really like to know more about the technical side of this. (I’m very interested)
-How did you handle the light (sunlight and flashes)
-How did you set up the sunbounce correctly (a few testjumps?)
-Some examples of the exif information (fast shutterspeed, mid level aperture, low iso?)
-How did you handle whitebalance (auto, standard camera presets, manual or did you play around with the RAW file afterwards?)
-(as was asked before) did you take a singel shot per jump or burst?
-Did you need to do alot of postprocessing?
    -…

    Thanks!

  19. much better than your first snowboardshooting (saw them on facebook)
colours are stuning, the moments are also nice but i would love to see more photos taken with 70-200mm. (i prefer telelenses when taking images of a kicker) the idea with the reail was great! very good images. try to send them to some mags! they love such creative stuff.

    greetings from bavaria,
    FloH

p.s. if there´ll be a lot of powder next winter i´ll call you so you can make you backcountrysession than ;)

  20. Hi guys, well done you got some kick ass shots, I wouldn’t be suprised if you got some paid work out of this :)

  21. Stijn

Got another question: Polariser, yes or no?
    I think I saw a filter on the camera but i guess it’s a UV/protection filter.

  22. pepin

    Were you using your 5D?
Didn’t the low fps limit you?
At what focusing mode were you using? (AI Servo?)

Love the shot with the flares on the snow.

  23. Edwin

Always a pleasure to watch your videos, thanks.

  24. Cristóvão

    That was NICE!!!!! and inspiring

  25. Tommi

Stunning photos! I’m amazed to read from above that you didn’t use a strobe. I thought these would be just silhouettes without one but I guess the Sunbounce does the trick…
I would also like to ask about the polarizer. Those clouds really pop from the blue sky, how did you do it?

    Thanks again, Tommi

  26. Tijl

    Great pictures!
I’ve also some questions for you:
    - That picture with those pentagon shapes in front of the flying snowboarder: did you do this on purpose? Or did you just get lucky with some unanticipated lens flare or snow on the lens?
    - Did you keep the autofocus on for these shots? Or do you focus manually? (by pressing the shutter when you know the subject is in the sharp zone)

Thanks for sharing so much valuable knowledge!

  27. Raymond C

Coolest :-) Looks like they are glide in air ..

  28. some great shots there. thanks for the vid

  29. Alex

    Nice shots

Did the UV filter have much of an impact at that high altitude?

  30. Those images are full of energy, they are amazing, but i guess you already know that .

what was your focusing technique for both the ground camera (was it pre-focused then switched to Manual) and for the hand held one (saw some wild panning there).

Thanks and keep it up guys.

  31. Hello,

Very nice shot and nice ideas to place your camera on these places.

Can you tell me how was the technic to use your pocket wizard like a remote control for your camera.
I mean, what kind of cable did you use between your pocket wizard and your camera.

In fact I wanted to do the same thing for another kind of pictures whit my “Bowens” but I don’t know which and wher I can find the good cable. I’m in Belgium too. In Brussels.

Long pictures live to you ;-)

    See u

    Dati
