VIDEO : Pieter shoots Erika on location

It’s the second week in the existence of LIME and time for our second video. Video can be a really powerful tool to educate and get inspired so we are going to produce lots of video’s on different topics for you.

In this second video for LIME I’m going to take you on a shoot with Bert’s favorite model Erika in an abandoned factory. In yesterday’s podcast we talked about the pro’s of being a jack-of-all-trades. As a wedding photographer shooting models is something I rarely do, so this was a chance to get out of my comfort zone, experiment, improve my skills and thus grow into a better photographer overall. I prefer using available light, so I don’t use off-camera flash very often. I hope this movie can get those of you who are affraid to try off-camera flash in the mood to just push yourself one step further and just do it. I did it, as you can see in the movie below, so why not give it a try yourself ?

I’m very much looking forward to your comments !

    Hi, great video and photos!
Great small softbox, could you tell me the size and the brand of it?
    Thanks for the tips!

  4. You gave me a few good ideas to work on. And for that….I Thank You!

Looking forward to the next installment.

  5. Hi Peter,
I liked the video, and also the pictures. You have a very different style from Bert, but I also like it!!!
My faves are: 2, 10, 14, 16 and 20. Those are (in my opinion) the 5 best shots!
I also have a question to the softbox….
how many flashes do you use with it? Only 1 Vivitar? I got a SB-28 and when I use my normal shoot-through-umbrellas I often have to use it on 1/2 or 1/1 power..a softbox takes even more light away 0.o

Anyway: Like the videos and it´s nice that you made a picte where Erika is moving…this is a great one!

Do you use Lightroom-Photoshop or just Photoshop? You use a particular preset in Lightroom? Cause i got 1 that look VERY similar ;)
    Cheers
    FloH!

  6. ahh sry…i forgot the I @ PIeter sry^^

Very nice video. This is the kind of stuff I like to see.

  8. Hi Pieter, hi Bert,
    Very interesting video, like always!!
I have a question for you: in the video seems that the images done with the softbox appear a little bit overexposed on Erika’s face. Otherwise, in the stop frame that represents the same shot shown in the video, Erika is perfect exposed and the ambient light is a little bit mood. Is this a technique you use in post production to obtain a good contrast or I completely fall the meaning?
Should be a good idea to over expose a little the subject during the shot, in order to put down the light of entire image during post production?
Thank you and I hope you will able to decipher my bad english!!
    Teo.

  9. De eerste 3 zijn nog wat statisch, maar vanaf dan ‘geht es richtig los’!!!

    Maar…die muziek, komaan dude ;-)

  10. Nice video and photo’s, Pieter!
Usefull narration, liked how you put that flash inside the clockwork.

  11. Love each and every one of these videos! Thank you!

I too am interested in the softbox you use with your flash as I prefer much softer light than a shoot through umbrella. I’d like to know the size and brand of the softbox as well please.

Or can you tell us how to soften the light with a shoot through umbrella?

Looking forward to the next installment!

  12. I’m pretty sure the softbox is a Lastolite Ezybox. See http://www.lastolite.com/ezybox.php for more information.

    Best,
    Patrick

  13. [...] a new video up on Squeeze The Lime, this time it’s Pieter’s turn to shoot. There’s lots of [...]

  14. Thanx for these movies! I love the behind the scene movies. Erika is very lovely, I hope that I will get some of these results this year.

  15. Love it to see Erika smile in the pictures, gives a more joyful mood =)

Like the way you work Pieter!

  16. Thanks for these fantastic video.

  17. @ger I convert my black & whites using Lightroom 2.2 and the standard build in black & white preset (high or low contrast, depending on the image) and then tweak it a little bit (exposure, recovery, blacks, contrast, etc) I don’t use much photoshop, only dodging & burning & a little vignetting now and then

    @Fabio like Patrick already answered : it’s a lastolite Ezybox :-)

@FD-pictures only one flash fits in the softbox. I use a combination of lightroom & photoshop, the most part it’s lightroom. If I use a preset it’s one that came with Lightroom or one from the Brilliant! set from David Jay that I tweak afterwards

@Matteo I’m not sure I understand your question completely … Are you saying that in the movie-footage Erika seems a bit overexposed but ok in the photos or … ? I always overexpose the face a tiny bit, because it softens the face and removes most of the wrinkles etc without having to use any postprocessing :-)

@everyone that commented : thank you for your very kind comments. I’m very happy that you guys seem to like it !!! Stay tuned for more :-)

Wauw Bert and Pieter, you’re both doing a great job. I really like the videos: they’re short but I learn a lot from it (thanks to the narrative style).

    Thanks for sharing you’re knowledge!

  19. I would like to throw you a photo challenge since I’ve not seen it done well. How about a video on shooting ice and snow sculptures?

  20. Very nice video, and some nice tips in there!

I love how you keep your light setup simple and ’squeeze’ the most out of it by trying different angles.

Hope there’s more where this came from ;)
